90th Anniversary OLYMPUS SPACE PROJECT

Focus on our planet Earth “today” while pondering what’s in store for it “tomorrow.”

Olympus has been dedicated to closely watching everything from the microscopic world to the vast world of planet Earth.
Established as a microscope manufacturer 90 years ago, Olympus has based its business on optical technology to diversify its “focus” of business to include imaging,
medical equipment and other businesses.

As the year 2009 sees the 90th anniversary of Olympus, the company celebrates this milestone by launching a project to focus on the Earth, “our planet.”
The OLYMPUS SPACE PROJECT is designed to capture the Earth as viewed from space, in order to examine its status as it is “today”
and consider the global environment for “tomorrow.”

The Olympus digital SLR camera “E-3,” a flagship model of the Olympus “E-System” family equipped with splash-proof and dust-proof features
to facilitate photography under extreme environments, has cleared all the rigorous tests conducted under the premise of use in outer space.
Loaded onboard the Space Shuttle, the “E-3” will be transported to “Kibo,” (meaning “hope”) the Japanese Experimental Module
installed on the International Space Station. Using the E-3 to shoot the Earth from that capsule will be JAXA astronaut Koichi Wakata.

The resulting images, meanwhile, will be released in various different forms. The OLYMPUS SPACE PROJECT,
designed to examine the status of the Earth as it is “today” and to consider how it should be “tomorrow,” is now taking off.
